Y’all this has been on my mind every since alchemy was introduce here.. I thought alchemy is about science and chemistry, things you can transform but why does it seem like the alchemist here sound like they are to be somewhat “invisible”.. they are far beyond powerful. Why is it that they know the whereabouts of others?
Because traditionally science is discovering the rules of the universe, while alchemy/ magic is discovering how to break those rules, insert your own, and reshape the universe to suit your desires. Sounds cool at first, until you realize even the smallest beneficial thing permanently damages space time, breaking down the universe to where things like diseases that shouldn't exist happen and and dogs randomly kill themselves in certain areas. Often when cultures banned alchemy/magic, it's not because they didn't understand it, but because they understood it too well. Understand now why the alchemists seems so powerful and insane?
Yeah I agree. Alchemy in all honesty is just an older branch of chemistry. I’d imagine alchemy as a weapon to be poisons or drugs, but not some power that a whole country fears and bans. Imo it’s just another one of those cases where authors don’t have a proper understanding of what they use in their story.
Alchemy is not magic, it’s chemistry. Learning an outdated version of chemistry doesn’t give you the power of control or reshape the universe. I think the author changed alchemy from chemistry to just straight up magic. Also where does alchemy damage space and time? Even with our knowledge and scientific advancements today, there’s nothing known that can affect space or time.
You might be interested in knowing that what ancient people called magic is far closer to science than it is to Harry Potter. Rituals were devised to take into account things that we would recognize today under a different name, for example aura is really molecular frequency. The idea is that a specific person, a rock, and a part of the universe like the weather, might have similar frequencies, and doing something to the person and rock at a time of day/year would potentially change that part of space time. And apparently this worked often enough that several people groups globally did similar practices for thousands of years.
There is a reason we do not call chemistry alchemy, because it's end goal is fundamentally different. Turning lead to gold was an overly simplified metaphor that regular people took seriously and ran with it. Alchemists were full on transhumanists, attempting to reshape their bodies and bend the universe to do their bidding using the same techniques, or "magic" as the ancient people, but with far less understanding on how it was supposed to work.
And before you start saying that ancient people were too stupid to consider things like scientific principles, there's an entire field of study called sacred geometry, looking at how ancient people incorperated advanced mathematics principles into rituals and monuments. For example, the Pyramid of Giza squares the circle with a 0.04% error, technically has 8 sides due to an exact 89 degree slant at each of the corners, and its dimensions can be used to accurately calculate the diameter of the earth. All of these things are near impossible for us to incorporate into a building in modern day without extremely advanced technology.
The ancient people may have called alchemy magic, but alchemy was in no way magic. There’s no magic that exists in this world. The ancients may have considered basic chemistry to be magic, but that was due to their lack of scientific knowledge. Besides, alchemy from the ancient times is completely different than the alchemy that is portrayed in this story.
