Keeping hair is actually quite common in many different cultures. Its like a token of luck or protection. In my native american tribe, when a family member passes away, we cut off some of their hair and keep it in a medical bag (one for each member) before burning the body. Since hair is basically indestructible except against fire. Its even in stories like Lord of the Rings; Galadriel gave three strands of her hair to Gimli. So seeing that didn't give me the creeps, I saw it as a very romantic gesture especially since before photographs, for men going to war, their women would give them braided locks as a memento instead (●'◡'●)ノ
