I think the localization team probably are using it in place of a Japanese pet name that doesn't have a one to one natural translation. Because we aren't used to seeing it in manga it can seem a bit strange

I imagine the translators chose 'babe' as a way to show how ukanos way of referring to sachio feels to JP readers, in the raws before they get together ukano calls him 'sensei' and starts calling him simply 'sachio' after they get together (mind you sachio never stops calling ukano 'ukano-san' so theres a gap there(▰˘◡˘▰ )
