I think it's also cause if she stays in the forest she still needs to visit the neighboring town every once in a while to get supplies. She is not self-sufficient.
that wouldn’t really be an ideal place for children, especially growing ones. they wouldn’t have proper education and food, plus supplies. i know they’d probably be fine with it, but it isn’t an ideal place for children to live in especially with how tough they had it up until now. it was easier when she was by herself, but now that she has children. besides, people are chasing after her and the first thing they would also think would be that she would be hiding out in a forest, so many would be searching for her in the woods. but i get what you’re saying.
In regards to education, only noble children would receive an education during that time setting. So regardless of where they stayed, as long as they stayed with the MC, they wouldnt receive any formal education.

Honestly she should have just set the kids up somewhere safe, maybe said forest with food for years, books for learning (writing, reading, cooking, etc.) Some protective spells maybe and those wood monsters but I'm not sure how he magic works entirely (if there's a limit of range she can be from said monsters and spells)
true true, but what place would have an amazing amount of supplies like that. children are expensive, and that’s not all but barriers might not exist in that world and if she did set it up, people would only become more attracted to her. her magic wouldn’t always protect her so if more people knew that she was a witch, the more people would try to break the barrier, and eventually it would break. the amount of money that would cost would make a millionaire broke and especially barricading the children in could cause them to have social problems or become afraid of other people especially considering what happened between them and their stepmother. /nm + lh
