So the Miko was originally supposed to be MC (brown hair) but ML (white hair) had read his medical report by accident and found out. He knew MC wasn’t ready to be the Miko so he sacrificed himself to be the Miko.
MC grew up and made it his goal to break ML out, but when he told ML his plan, he turned it down. So his only choice left was to make him unpure. After that the protection of the Miko was broken, so the fiends escaped, attacking the village.
I’m guessing anyone can turn into a fiend, so that’s why MC turned.
In turn they both sacrificed themselves for the others freedom.
