The change can feel a bit sudden at parts but I think the scene in the opera does a good job at building why they work well as a couple. I won’t spoil but it deals with beliefs of loyalty and learning to love a person rather than “love at first sight”. Afterwards he shows a lot more affection and remorse.
There’s also another aspect to it that’s more with the system but that’s even heavier spoilers. So yeah he’s a dick to start off but a reasonable one in retrospect.
