Personally, I'm not expecting her to be an IN-DE-PEN-DENT "modern woman." Not all women are confident and strong willed/ take on the system, but they need to find other, positive ways to coupe with their situation (which sometimes I think is more interesting to read.)
My major problem is that she's acting like a child, not an adult. I feel bad for her circumstances, but there's a point where you need to grow and decide if you're going to accept your situation or fight back, even subtly. Stop whining and focusing all your attention on a prince who doesn't care. You don't need to be confident or strong willed to at least try to make friends, even a maid can be a helpful ally. She has way more opportunities than a regular hostage, and she's not using any of them. I'd actually respect her more if she got a maid to sabatoge the prince from seeing other women. It's psychotic, but at least she would be doing something about her situation.
At the end of the day, I don't think readers want every woman in fiction to be a "modern" woman all the time, where goal is to try to out man the men. But rather they're tired of the childish whining that never leads to anything. Even women in eras where they were much more dependant on men, always had ways of dealing with situations they didn't like. Adults make decisions in any era; children just complain.
