I think it's because they, as a couple, aren't fated mates and because of that, the mother got insecure about their relationship and became very dependent on her husband. That's why she wanted her son to be an Alpha, because they are generally seen as superior in society, so her husband doesn't leave her.
I guess the husband wasn't as much of a nutcase as her but he's still bad for being an enabler and probably only cares that their child is an Alpha by reputation. That's why they all allowed the wife to go through with their son's mark removal.
