I see a lot of people being confused because of the 1st line of the manga but .... Taira was NEVER 8yrs old in the story, he was 8 years YOUNGER than Azuma and was a middle school student (while Azuma was in college and in his twenties).
When he came back after 4years it was to attend college so at the beginning of the story Taira was at least 13 or 14 and his older version is around 18.
