How i see it is that the older guy started dating the woman because she was a struggling mom. The kid had tattered clothes. That kid saved his life and he wanted to repay that kid. He wanted to take care of him like a father would. But its sad because the older guy never had feelings for the mother.
And then the kid threw himself at the older guy and it all fell apart.
