Maybe it was to show the change in the character? Like I was thinking, maybe since he got in touch with his trauma, he got back his childhood or sth? I think it's a really nice touch, although I too prefer a more "rough" lead
Idk I like this art style more because in the last one they looked pale like they never been out of their house and sorta emotionless. Even tho in this on they're still really pale, they look like they actually have more expressive feelings.
