Mostly yes. I was introduced to it on a fan website. They wrote fanfiction and produced fanart. Then I attended a convention and purchased some doujinshi. After that I bought full volumes from Japan and a japanese-english dictionary. Sometimes you could find scripts in english of different yaoi books. The world was a VERY different place.
