There are important parts of the story that have been cut out completely, like some details from where he was being held in the basement and the father's inner thoughts about the child's situation! They made the story waaaay shorter than the novel and I don't like that -_-
They usually do that because it’s much easier to go in details in novels than in comics. The same can go for adapting books into movies. Not everything is going to going to be included.
