Those kinds of bugs are called gu... they are parasitic bugs/worms used in cultivation... usually demonic cultivations... the more common reference you'll get are poison gu, where they put a lot of poisonous bugs in a jar and the one that survives in the end is a poison gu, and is usually used to kill someone.
The yin yang gu is usually linked with opposites that depend on each other to exist... good and evil, light and dark... and man and woman... I've seen different effects on different works... but usually a man eats the yang and "gives" the yin to a woman to tie them together, it usually makes them attracted to each other and if one dies the other die too (because of the bug). I also saw it being used to change one's constitution, a guy with yin energy instead of yang was dieing because of it and ate a ying bug to curb the energy... but as side effect turned to a woman and was desperately after the yang one to balance his body and go back being a man... and also to change ones personality to the opposite... not willingly usually...
So i guess it will be along one or more of those...
Btw... if you got interested in gu check the comic Master of Gu... or it's novel Reverend Insanity... but be warned of gore and the mc being a villain... ╮(￣▽￣)╭

No worries... I actually began to read that novel out of curiosity about gu after seeing references of it on another novel...
The Reverend Insanity novel is set in a world where cultivation is based on gu for everyone. Kinda like a symbiotic relationship. But there are still those that are considered evil or demonic there... and the MC is one of those people...
The dude is evil to the core. And there's a fair amount of gore. If you like messed up things you'll love it. Is particularly refreshing after you get fed up of reading about good guys...
