If they liked each other so much that they were sleeping together (and most likely they were doing so even BEFORE the engagement), WHY ON EARTH did Tom even ASK Bess to marry him? They ONLY thing I can think of is because he was more interested in how HE looked (and how a meek wife would make him appear a "better" man), than he was in marrying for love. The guy was an ass to BOTH sisters. And yes, Helen was an ass for sleeping with her sister's fiance. As for Bess, under the circumstances, she gave in ONE TIME while in a vulnerable state, and immediately made amends as best she could by ending the engagement of her and Tom and leaving. So I am willing to give her leeway and credit. Not so much Helen and most DEFINITELY NOT Tom.
