I think he panicked because he worried that they would think theyre hanging out romantically (which they kinda are) so he panicked to make it seem like theyre not (because societal pressures, homophobia etc), and that they just happened to bump into eachother and hang out, out of fear of what the others would view of him and their relationship TT TT forgetting they can be seen together as friends
