you know i genuinely think people are too harsh with the mother because she made a lot of mistakes in her past life (clearly) but she is very genuinely trying correct herself in a realistic fashion she doesn't just immediately get their lives together and start doting on mc she instead gets so focused on making sure her daughter will never have to suffer that same fate that she did in her original life and then neglected mc a bit and when mc makes that known the mother actually apologies and starts paying more attention to her (i forgot their names mb for all the mc mother stuff)
In a realistic sense the mother is doing great. Shes fleshed out, makes mistakes, deals with her own shit but tries her best to learn and adopt as a new mother (new in a sense she trying to be a “mother” for the first time) ppl easily assumes that mothers always knows what to do and are just great at it from the get go. But in reality they also know shit about parenting but is doing their best too. Esp when they were not even prepared to be a mother in the first place like lydia.
And the thought that she was young herself when she had Lily, and her husband cheated and left her for a new family. She didn’t have a family to rely on as well so of course she wouldn’t know how to take care of a child and be a mother. What she did to Lily was wrong but her circumstances shaped her to be like that. Hence why she’s an interesting character to read. Unlike other villainess mcs, she didn’t become good instantly. She’s flawed and realistic.
