He's making it seem like he treats his spinel as a toy only so that the duchess will not see the spinel as a threat. But it seems like it's not working based on the recent chap. Old guy must be spending too much time with the spinel that the duchess found it suspicious. And I think he really is acting as an asshole through and through so that no loopholes can be found. If he treats his spinel preciously behind closed doors, it would be obvious in the way the spinel will react to him (not scared). So he acts as an asshole even in front of the spinel.
