When Shime said too many things were crammed in the setting, I thought the same its like a very fast forward of someone's life. I think Shime did a human thing were he didn't play the hero and say I will protect you or be evil by taking advantage of the situation . He drew a line where by being next to him and lets Ren slowly understand and progress on his own.
