From the rough translation of chapter 51, Sakae works with Aoi secretly that even the Mononokean didn’t know. One day Aoi had a request to exorcise a demon. A long time has passed and Aoi is still not back, but when he came back he was wounded and he wouldn’t explain it to the Mononokean what happened. My point is, maybe Abeno gave Aoi the medicine but his body couldn’t take it so he died even though Aoi is a strong yokai. And Abeno got the blame for it.
