The kid is in love, and the teen is in denial thinking that the kid doesn't know what he is saying, so he is just "playing along" atm, not realizing that the kid REALLY DOES want to date him. But due to that, the teen just keeps making questionable comments that make the kid think that the teen already likes him like that as well, when the teen is actually thinking it is just a minor "cute little crush" that he'll probably grow out of (spoiler: he won't). My prediction is that at some point there will be a time jump to at least the younger one being in High School, if not after he graduates, and then he will make serious advances to show the older one that he has been serious. By the end, both will be adults and will end up together.
