In a way, I feel like this is sort of the brother's fault for not explaining anything. Shiro walked in on an odd and unexpected scene when he was only 14/15, of course he'd be shocked. But instead of the brother sitting him down and kind of explaining the whole situation and making him understand, he barely said anything and let Shiro come to whatever conclusions he wanted.
That's probably why Shiro was in denial so much about his feelings/sexuality, unlike his friend. So basically I'm not blaming Shiro for being the way he is ╮(￣▽￣)╭

There's also a scene where Law is talking about "his" hemophilia, and says his father must have had it, because only his clothes were soaked in blood, but the illustration showed the mother's gown all bloody. Now we know Jesse has hemophilia, so I figured it was something like your theory and not a translation error.
Now that I think about it current Athena looks like Killua from Hunter x Hunter and past Poseidon looks like Sinbad from Magi ╮(￣▽￣)╭
