I think they use that wording to show how much they have fallen from grace. Because just like other Nobles they are obsessed with their status and their bloodline. They could have used the word homeless but that wouldn't give you the same picture as as a back alley beggar. And the husband even said that she was treated even worse than a commoner like she wasn't even human ( I don't even know how that could mess with your psyche and your mental state)
