you’re right about them not being related, ML was adopted by mc and Namhyun, but since they’re not much older than him, instead of dad/uncle etc they ask him to call both of them hyung instead. I think the ‘brother’ translation of that word got people confused, hyung can be used to address non relatives close to you.
