After Haru no Noroi I had some expectation for this story, but at least for now I'm disappointed.
Can they talk less and have some real development?
I like the male protagonist before more than this fake masochist. I'd rather he pretended to be a good guy and didn't talk (so she found out his true self on her own) than this.
I like how I can see the paranoia and the pain in the characters' actions and thoughts (they express it even without words), not just that they say they're scared or they love the other one. I've also read this type of characters too many times already so none of them is new to me either.
Also, selling your kidney is not necessary a proof that you're mentally strong. He comes to love her too quickly to me.
Isn't talking a good way to develop a story? You get to know each other and find out what's going through that person's mind. Also, I don't think that he's in love with her yet, but more like interested and slightly obsessed. That's why she's mentally asking herself why he is able to easily admit that he's in love without changing his usually expression, and how it is that he was able to switch from wanting to sell her into prostitution to suddenly being in love, because it doesn't make sense. So just like her, we're all left to figure out what his real deal is; what is really going through his mind and what he is really feeling. We're all still in the middle of that journey, so nothing is clear yet.
I also don't think she sold her kidney as proof that she is mentally strong, but actually to show him that she can face him head on and that she isn't afraid to be as crazy as he is. As if she's showing him that she can fight him as an equal. He told her to sell herself, so she showed him that she could. He was surprised, because he never believed anyone could be insane enough to take it that far; to be as crazy as him. Imo, I think she was showing him that if she's crazy enough to sell her kidney, who knows what else she can do--to him? She's unpredictable and scary in her own way.
I agree with you, communication is gold, but this is, at least to me, blabbering. Also, no-one would believe he truly loves her at this time, so even with him saying it once would be enough for her to question his personality and intention. And selling a kidney is not mentally strong, she doesn't try to prove that but he takes it that way. Like you become a badass as you sell your kidney.
And actually, I don't think the guy has to be freaked out by her action. He lives in a yakuza family, they take people's kidneys out from them directly and brutally, so that's nothing new to them. Taking people's kidneys can be just like their daily job, ones selling their kidneys when they are desperate is normal.
She's indeed unpredictable, but not crazy. She didn't do that because of her own personality but because of his provoking. She had nowhere to go but that house and had to prove herself so I take that as logical.
A bit unrelated to the general discussion now, but I wanted to mention the author began conceiving this story about 8 years before it actually published. This kinda explains why it’s so dialogue heavy, there’s pranobly a lot she wants to tell.

I think she chose to have Haru no Noroi become her debut work because she didn’t want to fail with this story, the one she took to craft for such a long long time. Haru no Noroi was very expressive, and amazingly executed, even if it has an almost cliched concept story. I think the author chose to make a dramatic story, with a simple concept, in order to practice showing expression, pain, panic, on the characters and inflicting fear and anxiety on the readers. With this story, (a yakuza one!!) we’re only on chapter 3, and I am gladly expecting the author has more to tell and do! There’s still a mystery as to where this story will go, I assumed it’ll be a rom-com but it’s taking a turn to introduce us to criminal family procedures and their intertwined relationships. The lead is charming but a total mystery. The “masochist” trait he possess was supposed to be for comedic effect, but when the female lead found out he’s not totally related to the grandfather, we got a taste of the fact the “masochism” in him, and his character, could be something deeper.
(I got the info about her making reasearch for the story from her Pixiv account, where she first published almost something like concept work of Raise wa Tanin ga li)
I do think she was trying to proof her strength though, and I do believe it is mentally strong. Just like you said, she had nowhere else to go, so how could she continue staying inside a house with someone who considered her weak and only good to be sold into prostitution? She couldn't stay if the situation remained the same, so she had to proof her strength to a man who holds strength in such high regards. Why? Because they would be living in the same house and going to the same school. But why selling her kidney?
It`s not that you become a badass if you sell your kidney. Context matters. It`s how she essentially gave him the middle finger by throwing his words at him, but only with a twist. Instead of selling her body into prositition, like he offered, she decided to sell a body part. That is what you`d call irony, and that was the point: she did what he wanted in a completely surprising and twisted way, and it was so unpredictable and uncommon to him that he was left intrigued by her. Sure, he`s a Yakuza and therefore has seen, and has probably taken out, a lot of kidneys himself, but how big`s the chance that he's encountered a woman who willingly sells her kidney because of what was essentially a throwaway comment from a guy about prostitution?
Not very likely, and that's why he was so surprised. It was completely new to him.
Perhaps it doesn`t make her completely crazy, but what she did was crazy. If she`s willing to go that far; who knows what`s really going on in her mind? Who knows what she`ll turn into at the end of this ride?
"His taste in men is a disappointment"
