Everyone's trauma from abuse manifests differently... That said... I grew up in an abusive Asian household. I was forced to grow up quicker than I should have because my family used me as a scapegoat when my dad was angry. For 14 years I lived like that, and now looking back on it 8 years later, I had an easier time trusting people because I wanted to believe that they'll give me affection.
The twins are mentally 23 years old, but they could be like some other 20 year olds out there, older than me, who still act like children. They're right to be wary, but I can't help but feel a lot of their reactions are manufactured for the sake of story drama. That's not my cup of tea but it makes sense from a writer's PoV, more drama = longer story and engagement.
That said, I've already dropped this story, just came back to see if anything new and interesting happened. Like them growing up and matching their mental age.

Read a bit of it, I think I'll discontinue. I don't like the ML at all, he looks like a furless rat and acts like he's bipolar. The whiplash I got from reading the first chapter he was into the next was strong. I was skeptical of it's 9.7 rating and I was right to be skeptical.
We don't talk about the first chapters. Skip to the chapter 30 or 35. The story is actually good when the author started to get away from the cliches.The ML do get better super quickly too.

Apparently the author wanted the "soldier returning from war was too used to the battlfield to stay a decent man" trope before quickly turning around. Just put the start of the story out of your mind and enjoy the rest. You might like it. Edna is not typical either.
