I think its more than just low self-esteem. I think our MC is a good person in spite of her shady work. She does awful things for good reasons but she still very much knows how bad her actions are. Part of her willingness to sacrifice herself is to atone for the wicked actions taken in pusuit of the greater good.

They suffered so much already, even tho they're adults mentally, they have a children's frail body and endured a lot of physical and mental abuse from that witch since birth. I understand that the emperor was also a victim, but i just cant forgive him right now. 'Kay he was forced into some kinda contract with that bitch and couldn't kill her without dying and she had his children without his consent, but still the twins weren't to blame, they are innocent and victims too. He shouldn't ever have let they stay with that witch because he knew she was a terrible person so ofc she wouldn't be a good mother. I guess it was easier for him to just act like the twins and that woman didnt exist, although in my opinion, it was his mistake. But maybe in the future the author will give us some reason as to why he just left the twins with that evil woman, like, there is a reason why he couldn't do anything, idk we'll have to wait and see.
