He never really said much about his past (which is understandable) she always heard it from other people. So I guess what she meant was that they so close, but at the same time kinda distant because he doesn’t open up to her. I think those last chapters are poorly written and it force the readers to make excuses for the main character if they don't want to admit it's just dumb.
