I just re-read the original Beauty and the Beast and, yes, the rose is a Disney thing. In the original one Belle has a magic ring that transports her to her house and back to the castle. The only other magical item is the mirror that really shows Belle whatever she wants to spy on. The only time limit the prince has is his own lifespan.
