He didn't abuse the MC to the point of mental breakdown, in fact that is the first time he hit/hurt the MC physically (according to the MC's narrative). It's just that during that time, the ex is the only person the keeps him on holding onto life that is why that hurt the MC so much when the ex hit him (emotionally rather than physical).
The MC is afraid of his ex during that time but I don't think he hates him otherwise he will not put in the effort to stop the boss, also the ex still loves the MC during that time otherwise he will not told the MC to stop (because he thought that if he didn't stop the MC the boss might hurt him) despite knowing that his fingers will be cut off.
The boss action during that time is inhumane and uncalled for, given that the ex is practically civilian during that point (didn't have business with the gang). At the very least I don't think that the ex deserves to have his fingers cut off.

The reason the was hurt so bad emotionally is because the ex is the only person that makes him feel that he mattered and his only reason for living, so when the ex hit him it hurt him more emotional than physical, he had a mental breakdown but it is not that the ex intendedly pushes him to be on that state.
Please note that the information that we have is complete incomparison to the characters so they are not aware of what is happening the other characters elsewhere. While we are aware that the MC was badly hurt emotionally when the ex hit him, we can actually say the same when the MC hits the ex but since the Manhwa only show us what the MC thinks the reader is not explicitly made aware of it.
