In regards to romance, rather than smut, this was totally me back when I was an avid BL-reader. I used to be okay with straight shoujo, but I could hardly tolerate it after getting into BL. Now, I rarely read romance at all, but if I do, it's probably either shounen-ai or a straight subplot of a shounen or seinen manga.
