Clearly the mother was suffering through some psychological issues but never received help or counseling, instead the people around her let it be and it affected the poor girl so deeply in the end she could not help but believe her mother's words. After she died, I think the dream was a way of justifying her mother's abuse, believing that her and her mother were the same outwardly since she say herself in her dead mom, how her and her mother in the end could connect through being 'lizards' but it just so happens her mother forgot.
I don't hate the mom, she needed therapy. She was suffering a mind illness but no help was offered to her, I think it depicts mothers who go through post partum and cannot form a bond with their child. Some moms might even go so far as to kill their kids or themselves believing something is wrong.
And as sad as it seems, accepting herself as a lizard is what saved the daughter. She did not repeat the same cycle even if she was afraid of having kids.
