I think DH returning as a hero has nothing to do with whether he gets a happy ending or not. In my opinion what the author was trying to say is that he wouldn't be transforming into a good person overnight, and this is exactly what's happening. DH is the protagonist of the side story and yet he is far from a hero. So I want to believe that there is still hope for a happy ending for those two. As messed up as this story is, I'm too invested now

Yes, I believe that could be the case. But also it can still have potential. the author wanted to keep his character %100 true so they also said that he’ll be the same *sshole we know him to be. So character development might be slow because of how toxic of a person he was previously. He legitimately didn’t see why his past transgressions were wrong and underhanded tactics are all he knows. Looking at how his father appeared in the main story you can tell who taught him to be like that. But anyways, I’m not arguing, I’m just adding in my two cents here.
