Maybe because english isn't my first language, but in my country if you say you're going in a date with your parents people will think it's in a romantical way...

A date is just a social or romantic appointment or engagement. Like sometimes I would say that I’m going on a date with my friends as in hanging out with them.

Also context is key. Sometimes people just use words differently and you just have to look at the context.
