My theory is that the novel is actually based on the MC's past life. MC and ML had a tragic ending (the OG novel). So MC and ML were reincarnated into modern days. The MC was actually reading his past memories. Finishing reading the novel was the trigger for MC and ML to go back into their OG past lives and try and change their tragic ends.
