Just read a discussion/spoiler forum and I hate the Male lead. He should have never been the Male lead. If you want more details as to why I hate him, just reply.

"In the novel the autor try in every way to shift the sin of the MC death from the ML but one thing is for sure: HE CLEARLY CHOOSE HIS OWN DREAM OVER HIS LOVER.
And let me say another thing: after your family is killed by your lover, your house burned and you are trown in the jail with people saying you and your family are monsters, for a girl that never known violence or malice is possible to be a little confused and maybe do something irrational like trying to repent for the sin of your family?
The ML know very well the MC and should at least try to talk to her BEFORE the pubblic process and NOT AFTER...He could have saved her if he abandoned his dream (the MC clearly said she would have abandoned every thing for him) or even if he simply was more considerate to her and tryed to conveìince her (he never begged her to change her decision to die he simply told her to choose the monastery over the guillottine and did it only once then gave up...HE GAVE UP ON HER), but he choose to dirty his hand with the blood of an innocent...no with the blood of a pure heart girl that was his lover...and never payed for it, never got punished for it and in the end he even got his woman again after taking away all from her: her family, her home, her life and even her memory was soiled for ever...pretty unfair if i can say my opinion...
i do think he is a better ruler than the MC parent but i DO think he is not a man, at least not one worty of her."

Reply from the same user who explained it much better again:
"I really didn’t want to post another reply on a thread I personally considered close, but since I was specifically called in question I’ll do my best to explain again my reasons:

in my previous post I didn’t want to make the ML appear like a bad person, it’s more like he was really similar to “Machiavelli’s Prince” so he used whatever means to reach an aim…even use the feeling of the MC as a shield against her family eyes and ruin her life after. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, he is in fact a good lord for his people, BUT (I say it again) he is one of the worst possible lover.

When someone chooses he is FREE: he freely chooses what he cares and freely leaves what can be discarded or used for his objective.

The ML choosed the easyest way to deal with matter, he never tryed to trust the MC, leaded the revolution thinking (with a bit of naivity) that the MC would surely try to save her life saying that she doesn’t know anything of the crimes of her family allowing him to close her in a nunnery. A bit of a risky move for someone that did a revolution and was undercover for 2 whole years because it could have raised some suspicion over his ability as a ruler, but was something that allowed him to do his revolution and have his conscience clean (more or less) and wash his hands of her situation. Here I say he was a coward! After you did something you need to face the outcome until the end, but he tried to run!!

THE DAY AFTER THE REVOLUTION HE MAKE HER DO A TRIAL THINKING THAT EVERYTHING WILL GO AS HE WANTED.

He make her face a trial the day after he destroyed her life and everything she belived without talking to her first!! And he was taken unprepared when in said trial she testifyed against herself. So seeing that MAYBE he was too much sloppy in how he dealed with her he visited the MC in her cell saying that he could still save her, but was refused and, what is hilarious, is that he was refused because the MC wanted to make him shine as the hero that defeated the evil previous ruler…she didn’t want to die out of shame nor she wanted to die to preserve her honor or for the people, but she wanted to make it easy to deal with her matter and the ML accepted it right away.

SO THE NEXT DAY SHE WAS EXECUTED.

Now, is this really something a sane person would say or do? I think not. It’s obviously not, still he accepted it. Why? Because even if he DID care for her he never really loved her. She was more like a beautiful flower, something nice to have near, something that you want to see on a shelf and that can be taken care of, but even something that can be discarded for other and more important matter. The MC family nor the ML didn’t want her to growth as a person because usually for nobility the female must be a beautiful decoration for the groom, and the ML liked her as she was…simply a beautiful flower. After killing her he begun feeling guilty and burying himself with work and distancing himself from every form of happiness as a form of repenting, a befitting ending that he choosed for himself and i still think that this was what he deserved. They should have never be togedher. She should have try to walk her new life free from her past, she payed with her life whatever sin she did now she is free from every kind of shackles….

You stated that there wasn’t other way to deal with the state of affair, but to me there were a bunch of way:

1)Symply never do a revolution. It seems something stupid, but a revolution is always something that take and heavy toll on a fief and can destroy it. If the previous ruler was evil, but the next one could lead the fief on a completely different road the most intelligent thing to do is try to force the succession. The ML, his friend and all the rebels could try to make the MC see how the fief was ruled, make her go out of the “cage” that her family built to her and make her growth to became the next ruler, helped with the competent people that wanted to change the situation. She would have the backing of all the force that would otherwise lead a revolution, everything without spill blood (because I dont think that the MC and her family were the only one killed…).

2)If the forced succession couldn’t be done the MC could be made enter the revolution as an helper or an active leader and togedher with the ML force a revolution that not only would make her and the ML live togedher but smooth the process of the change of regime allowing far less blood to be spilled. Doing so the family of the MC could even be putted in jail for the rest of their life instead of being executed depending of the stability of the new regime. And after trying to make the fief a better place IF there was no way for her to continue to live because people would never accept her to be alive, only then she coould have been killed. She would die knowing why and how, it wouldn’t be a betrayal anymore, it would be a a death due to force majeure, it would have been a serene death. It was clearly stated that the MC would have betrayed her family to help the ML with his revolution even if she loved her family…but he didn’t trust her

3)If the revolution needed to be done, don’t send her to a trial. Her parent and relatives were killed without a trial,2 was burned alive and 2 beheaded, but she was left because EVERYONE know that she was innocent even the soldier that served the hose know it, not only the servant. Don’t make a trial if everyone know that she is innocent and you want to make her live, don’t make that damn trial in front of all the people of the fief that never had seen her and can group her togedher with her parent.

4)If you really need to make a trial before all the people of the fief because you think that the daughter of the previous hated ruler could convince all the people of her innocence (tell me how please…) at least TALK TO HER BEFORE THE TRIAL AND TELL HER WHAT TO SAY! NOT AFTER, BEFORE!! DAMN IT!!!

Personally I think there was many way to save her simply what lacked was the will to do so.

What I can’t digest of this story is that it could have really been a masterpiece if it was more developed, a political and historical drama similar to “Akatsuki no Yona”, but with more emphasis on the feeling and with reincarnation. But the author choosed to ruin the story:

First after that astounding beginning, that was more fitting for a serious and deep novel, he choosed to flatten the novel on a simple romance where everything is around the love story of the protagonist, cutting off the context in wich the story is developed and all the political scenary that leaded to the revolution: we only know that the fief of the MC was too strong and the king with the help of ther nobles plotted to destroy it…but how they did it is unknow and why the previous bad ruler was changed with a competent one that make Laius (the name of the fief) the strongest force in the kingdom and consequently putting the king in a more precarious situation isn’t explained.

Second, and that is what made me really disappointed, he chooses to make the love between the MC and the ML a real love…making all the story simply implode….how can that be real love! Love is responsibility, trust and above all never hurting the object of your love. That is love! Here is more like the MC justifying all that the ML did. He should have used the betrayal and tragedy of the beginning as a trigger to make the protagonist grow, to make her serch what real love is and how the world around her AND OUT OF HER "CAGE"-MANSION WORK! I'm really fond of love stories that is why i can't forgive such a coarse error!!

As closing note i need to say that i found much more human and real Tim/Wilfred. I really despise his character, he was someone that did evil to gain power. But when reincarnated he was forced to live in a country were people called him the devil, launched stones at his dummy, and accused him of sins he never done pushing him to insanity, he clearly stated that if it was something of the past or something that appened in another place he would simply past over it and tried to live another life, but it was the people to make him a demon. He could be developed as an anti-hero and give more deep to the story… Too bad that his character was flattened and in the last arc he choosed to work for the ML…"

Yes. Just..... Yes. I agree. At the moment, Tim/Wilfred is the most human character in this story and I can perfectly understand why he did what he did. I would rather the ml n the mc didn't end up together. Something just doesn't sit right with how they slowly loving each other again. I don't hate the ml or mc. And I do wish the ml can atone more or just focused on the fief and let mc follow the path she choose. I know there will be someone that didn't agree with my opinion. That's fine but this is what I sincerely thought of.
