I need to say this since I’ve been waiting for this beautiful masterpiece to blow up for two years now … the author depicts the characters, especially geom’s psychological struggles so realistically and relatably that I’m actually concerned for the author. Like, who the HELL did she interview?? How much research did she do?? Is SHE okay??? It’s shocking to me how amazingly Geom’s hyper sexuality, trauma bond, avoidance, hyper vigilance and fawning is depicted. I don’t know how the author knew so much about coping mechanisms in exploitation and rape, but my god it was awfully real imo.

I mentioned this before but I’ll say it again, a lot of the rape scenes are draw so graphically for a reason; it puts US in the eyes of his rapists, which makes everything a million times more awful to read. At no point did I feel like the author INTENDED for the rape scenes to turn you on, it was sexualized at parts but only because we are in the perspectives of the rapists (zoom-ins, disembodied parts, etc.)

Some scenes where Geom just visualizes himself after the rape just in complete darkness strikes me as really disturbing because we’re seeing a reflection of his inner mind. In the chapter when he was raped at Rieder’s party, where it depicted him lying lifelessly and covered in semen, was actually gut wrenching to me. It felt disgusting and repulsive and sexual in a very, very intentional way, and I found myself relating a lot to that image.

Geom’s early years was also fucking insanely realistic, how he coped by “flirting” with older men, how it got him “gifts” and how he then learned that flirting and seducing people was the best way to defuse a situation (we can see that during university, when he said “I’m a virgin” whenever he was attacked/insulted.)

The author really, really needs a wellness check.

I’m glad MC got his revenge, but honestly, I wanted Reider to suffer more. Maybe he’s already suffering, but I thought he would be imprisoned or convicted too. But after learning that he's gradually losing his sight, though, I think a slow suffering is much better than ending his life. I could say that of all the characters, I hated Reider the most.

On the other hand, I thought I would dislike Kim Hong because, for the first few chapters, he seemed like he was lusting after Geom. Surprisingly, though, he’s the character I’ve come to love, aside from the main characters. His loyalty and love, in whatever form that may be, could’ve passed as a second male lead, but I’m glad he didn’t impose his feelings on Geom. It feels like his love is more inclined toward loyalty than lust.

All in all, it’s surprising how attached I’ve become to the characters. I really hope Geom seeks professional help, though. I’m hoping for side stories where I can finally see more of Geom and Wooyeon being happy together.

Okay, so Reverse Thinking has been a hot topic on Korean bltwt because of some rumors that it’s based on the nth room crimes, that the story involves the sexual abuse of women, illegal filming, incest, and bestiality. People have been calling for a boycott and such. So I spoke with a Korean friend of mine who read the novel to verify how true these things are, and I want to share what I found out: So first of all, there is no violence against women. Or at least none shown onscreen. There is no incest or bestiality (the latter of which I’m not even sure is allowed on Bomtoon). There is however, significant violence and illegal filming perpetrated against the mc. It’s a very cut and dry blackmail/revenge story. Albeit an extremely hardcore one. There are two gang rape scenes and imprisonment. I also want to say it is COMPLETELY understandable to be weirded out or distressed by these themes and not want to touch the story, however I wanted to make this post because there’s a lot of misinformation surrounding it. At it’s core, this is just a story about violent things happening to dudes. The reason I believe it’s important to make this distinction is because while many Korean bl fans have a high tolerance for problematic themes such as abuse and rape, they aren’t fine with seeing it happen to women. The reason is because Korea is obviously a pretty misogynistic country, so Korean bl fans treat bl as a form of escapist fiction where women can’t be hurt. (Not saying I agree with this mentality) But anyways, I hope this post gives a little insight and encourages you to think about the story from other perspectives regardless of whether or not you want to read it.
