Hits super close to home. Not being able to identify the feeling of being in love does make one feel that ultimately the relationship will end because you don't think you were ever in love or you're afraid the love you give isn't as much as you receive. It's scary hurting the other person but it's scarier to be hurt. Which is why he rejects the idea and concluded on his own that it won't work.
