This is such a common theme. It makes me wonder, do people in Asia really have to pay back family members debt if they aren’t married to them or co-signers? Wouldn’t people be messing people over all the time?

I think when someone wants to take a loan they should have a guarantor (not sure if it's the right word for it) meaning when the person couldn't pay the loaner back then the guarantor is responsible and should pay them instead. At least it's like this in my country which is also in Asia.
Though I have to admit that it's quite the cliché in yaoi.
Car sex and paying back the shark loans is part of every yaoi I guess

God that sucks! I get it if they would go after a guarantor who accepted covering the debt in case the person who took loan coudn't pay for it, but transfering the debt to someone just because they're related? that sucks so much! It's quite a common trope in BL so I was also wondering if it actually works this way and it's terrifying and so unfair!

Sometimes even the guarantor is tricked. But the rules have gotten a bit better for the guarantors so they are more aware but getting scammed is pretty easy. And don't even get me started on kin duty on loans. It's frankly not fair, but truly I get why I mean after their death exactly who would pay them back and if we keep saying it's unfair then the loan companies will only endure losses not being able to recover shit cuz of all the swindlers and deaths of the main party who took the loan in the first place. It's a very controversial topic.

Well, in my country you need at least family member's or close relative's phone number so if they can't contact the person, they can ask for family to contact them.
Mostly only to get new contact of their whereabouts, not to pay for their behalf.
Some of my ex-coworkers give my number to loan and it is really annoying and iritating.

Thanks to whoever mentioned Gu had a novel. Looks like this author has several novels worth reading. https://www.novelupdates.com/series/years-of-intoxication/

So far she hasn’t done anything really on her own. Not sure why she’s confident of saving her family.

Well she did break out of the temple on her own, and saved those kids in the forest by noticing the villager was in on it, then she took the initiative to travel with the black haired prince. I feel like she's confident because she's been successful in her plans ever since she got ahold of her new body.

Not really, she left the temple but then had problems in the city and had to be saved due to poor judgement and needed help from a man, then made decision to help in village but need help from a man, and trying to get home needed help from a man, and so forth. So far her heart is in right place but the ability to do things is not so good
