The mom was ready to get a divorce but in doing so, she would lose out all of the money she made as well as her shares of the company. She was fine living a middle class life until FL was diagnosed with Asthma, and it was pretty serious. She needed the funds for her medication which is why she was hesitant in proceeding with the divorce. So, to delay the divorce, she had to dress FL up as a boy so that she would be accepted by the dad.
She needs to continue acting as a man so that she could protect her and her mom and only until she could bring down her father who is the current CEO of her company. She wants her mom to get the company back from that sorry excuse of a father.
