it can’t be the closest translation because “what’s up” is a phrase used in present day whereas this was set years ago, likely near elizabethan era, which obviously didn’t use such uneducated language

Tbf they were against the father marrying that upstart and letting her brat join their family. They were just useless in keeping those (the idiot son and father) two in check.
