What's happening is definitely horrible, but it makes sense from Winter's poverty, he's seeing how Raymond is treating these people, how he's being treating himself and not saying anything against the situation. Winter is clearly not, in the sense, smart, so he's taking what's being shown and using it show his feelings even tho it's wrong. I feel bad for both parties, but its definitely well written in my opinion.
