Leonia's mother (who is the duke's sister) was actually killed by her orphanage teacher (Ms Connie, not the maid, they have the same name) because the teacher was insanely in love with the duke. She is also a human trafficker, who was only nice to the children to get their trust. The one who instigated the entire murder was Leonia's father. The death of her mother was never an incident, the teacher just spread it everywhere like that to make sure that no one ever thought it was murder. The teacher then buried Leonia's mother's body behind the orphanage. When Leonia and the duke realise this, Leo first breaks down in despair and thought everything was her fault cause she was the reason Ms Connie (the bitch) was still alive and continuing to do evil deeds as she didn't think the teacher who treated the children so well was the mastermind all along.
The actual father regretted about instigating the murder against his first wife and started treating his second wife as Leo's mother, even going as far as to call her name when they were f*cking (bio father & sec wife). He is actual scum. It was never a wandering knight, the teacher just made up rumours to seem so and get rid of suspicion.
The duke ultimately gets together with the OG FL, Varya. Leo is happy that she gets to call her mum (since OG FL is great) and was the one acting as wingwoman to get the 2 together. ML is the prince btw.
