I asked this on Twitter and no one has replied. I genuinely wanna educate myself on the matter so I wanna test luck here... how poor people pirating art works like this harms artists? I can understand that people who could pay for it and decides to pirate means loosing possible income, but in the case of poor people or people who live in countries where LGBT content is prohibited are not a possible income, so them pirating doesn't mean loosing income, does it? it's not actually "losing" or "stealing" but more like there weren't readers at all...? idk if I'm making sense

The artist is losing income no matter what if you read it illegally, it’s her whole career, it’s the same as stealing products from a supermarket without paying, the owners of the supermarket are buying the products for their shop but not getting anything back from it because you’re not paying, so they are just losing their money while you get to enjoy the product whether you pay for it or what. Any artist would be rightfully mad at this no matter what your situation is.

It's less about losing what they DO have but more about losing what they COULD have. Some ppl translate series and sell those copies, making other people money and not the author. Illegal websites also make money through ads, so you being here is making this website money. While having an account here makes less ads, there are hundreds of other websites people use and those are making money off illegal readership as well. While you may not see it, many people profit off illegal translations.
Generally I do agree with you, because regardless some ppl can't buy the content legally as you said. BUT there are lazy bums who still read it illegally although they could read legally. So I get why authors get angry and it's why I don't really push back, because yes their content is being stolen, and it is generating profit for someone else most of the time. Unfortunately, if a comic has a higher illegal readership than a legal one, the comic can be canceled as well. Since views here don't count on legal websites, stories can get canceled and the author has to either scrap the idea or try to move somewhere else (which is hard to do). This can impact an author financially because many of them are physically hurt by extended hours sitting and drawing to meet deadlines, which can impact employment opportunities while they try to publish something else.
I keep my illegal activities on the downlow for a reason, to not add onto the pile of stress the authors have - regardless of whether I agree with them or not on this topic.

´Honestly i think of it like i cant buy it cuz i have zero monies so i might as well pirate it. There was no money to be made from me. Ive bought games that i already finished watching complete walkthrus because i had the income and the money despite not touchinh it even once since. Its not like i wanna fuck ppl over i support when i can. And when i cant piracy cuz the other option is to not read it which also results in zero income for the author. Idk if it made sense

it's not the same tho? when you steal something from the supermarket you reduce the stock, but these webtoons are based on views, don't they? a poor person reading it illegally doesn't reduce the stock and prevent other person from buying that specific unit that was stolen. If it's based on views, that poor person not increasing the number of views doesn't really affect??? it's like they were a person that don't know the existence of that manhwa.

thank you, this response makes more sense. I too get mad at people that could read legally and still chooses not to and also hate the fact that these sites profit from authors work :/ but idk where to read fan translation from people that do it for free so I stay here. And ngl there are a lot here so it's also because its comfortable reading everything there. I'm not trying to say what I'm doing is okay and I agree authors have the right to get mad too!! i just wanted to educate myself, thanks

I understand what ur saying and this is js my opinion but I don't think the author have taken this into consideration regarding ppl from other countries where LGBTQ rights are banned since all official translations are for countries which allow LGBTQ rights and in a way still feel robbed since there are ppl who have access to her translations without paying for them. I feel like ur thinking makes sm sense that these readers aren't technically "readers" however seeing her work reach a large unintended audience makes her realize the amount of profit she lost out on if that makes sense
(BTW JS WHAT I THINK NOT LOOKING FOR CONFLICT)

Me too!! I have at least one copy of like 5 of my favorite series because that's what I can afford. Tho I do re read them when there's power outage lmao if I could I would read everything legally!! I was even planning in the future (it's one of my main goals in life) to buy mangas on legal japanese sites even tho I don't know japanese and then read fan translations just bcs I genuinely want to support authors, hope I can do that.

I'm not shaming and I understand since I'm also here lol
But unfortunately, you will not find any actually free translation site. All the sites have to pay money to stay up, so they have ads. I think the least scummy way would be to receive the translated images directly, but translation groups don't do that to prevent unrelated people from stealing and selling the stolen images.

Great points! You actually hit on something important to the conversation! The bigger problem is that the authors know and can conceptualize how much profit they are not going to get. Which is why, for the sake of illegal readers who can not support or 100% support for whatever reason and the author, this should all be on the downlow. Personally I am more upset that the person caught was so careless, because it could hurt the rest of everyone else!

Why do you think it’s based on news? And why do you think money doesn’t matter? That artists whole income is the amount of money she becomes from people paying her art work, do you think artists get money from people staring at their art works? Don’t you know that freelance artists live off commissions and not views? This ain’t like tik tok or youtube videos

does the author have any other works? Because the ones under "other author's works" don't seem to be by the same person????

same author and artist
