I'm pretty sure the purpose of the red string was just having the power to bring them together and from there on out it was up to both of the character's to fall in love with each other on their own.

Kousuke and Masahiro really love each other, but they are unsure how to express their feelings for one another without being insecure about each other's future. Since Masahiro is too modest and never complains about wanting something, I'm thinking that the way he is acting now will lead him to burst at one point how he really feels and what he actually wants from Kousuke.
