Honestly I agree it's the consequences of his own actions. I get that there was so many people claiming to be him but the most I can see them doing is making false stories y'know I get he got frustrated but I bet Clauden was the only one who's story probably stood out from the rest plus he had proof. He let his frustration blind him instead of really listening to Claudens words and comparing it to the rest. Like hey he is the first to mention a keepsake and if he forgot about giving that flower to Clauden then dude that's his bad. Doing that to Clauden is no excuse the poor guy almost died...
