I agree, they had no hand in it, they might have indirectly benefitted from her miseries but they had no way of knowing it was at the expense of a person's life. The king knew he had to keep it a secret so no one would question it or go against him. It's kinda like walking into a murder scene and suddenly u are seen as a culprit, for just being there.
