I thought the ML is a white haired daddy, not some plain, same-as-others kinda guy. I saw one of the comments saying this is unique. It is a unique CONCEPT, but not plot and characters.

I don't think its a joke though , its very common through out asia . It rather a way of expression of desperation of believing in what ever deities will save you. I also have seen people in my asian country use this prahse . Like when they get into an accident or something unexpectedly bad happens .
