The setting is historical Japan so it's all culturally accurate but it is annoying and unpleasant to read. Also this culture is still very prominent in Japan so there's an audience that enjoys these stories but for international fans, it's hard to enjoy it.
Certainly, it's all about respecting the other person and not forcing values.
