Owen has been through many different timelines and has been chasing Nux because Nux is basically his pair mate. He never really understood his own feelings on the matter until our current timeline, when Nux "looked" first.
It's important to remember that Owen's species are utilitarian by nature. They focus solely on the best-seeming outcomes to achieve the best results for themselves through timelines and time travel. It likely doesn't even take too many loops to make things go their way. It's the reason they own the universe.
However, with Owen, none of his choices led to an outcome where Nux lived a long and healthy life. To the point where all the looping led to one of the worst outcomes, Nux not existing anymore. Owen's drive was to fix the outcome in his favor solely. Now comes our Nux, who, without any inference from Owen at the start, looks at him first. In that one change, Owen realized why he was even doing this, it's cause he loves Nux, not just to get the best outcome.
